Fly Away With A Book : paintng murals at the Senekou Tunubuku Reference Library

Last week I traveled to Castle Bruce to help fellow Peace Corps volunteer Chase to renovate and paint murals in the Senekou Tunubuku Reference Library in the Kalinago Territory. The Kalinago are the indigenous people of Dominica---learn more about the Kalinago people here : Kalinago Territory.

We worked with a local youth group---first, we painted the walls and shelves bright colors...

all the bright colors really enlivend the library!

Next, I had the youth draw their ideas ---we started with the question: what do you imagine when you read a book?

The young people created some very imaginative designs...then they traced the designs onto the newly painted walls using carbon paper...

and painted, with great precision the designs they created......

adding a few finishing touches to the pirate ship....
this one she called "Romance" .....since she liked to read romance novels...

proud artists with their mini mural...

an imaginative swan....

these two drew and painted a 'Goose Bump" book....

the artist with hummingbird and flower...
space ship......

I provided the silhouette outline and the teens painted it with black paint----the space ship and pirate ship the teens designed and painted...
With 3 days of community effort, the library got a complete make-over ---thanks to all the hard work everyone did! especially Chase who applied for and obtained a grant from Friends of the Eastern Caribbean for all the paint and a even a new computer for the library.
